Snow A Mystical Tool for Cleansing, Releasing, and Manifesting
Virginia’s latest snowstorm has officially transformed our little Commonwealth into an epic, frozen tundra. With meteorologists casually tossing out snow accumulation predictions ranging anywhere from 3 to 20 inches, residents hoard staples like bread, milk, and—let’s be honest—wine.
It has been almost a week since the storm left six or so inches of snow on the ground that locals are still excavating themselves from. With fallen temperatures hovering in the 20s, shoveling six inches of snow feels more like shoveling five feet of icy concrete. The back roads, a frozen apocalypse of snowy ice, means cancelled school for the week, and everyone has hunkered down waiting for another snowstorm this coming weekend.
But before we finish that second bottle of wine, it’s time to see this snow as more than an inconvenience. In fact, falling snow purifies and moisturizes the air. So, let’s turn this frosty chaos into opportunity: embrace the snow for winter rituals that cleanse, release, and manifest.
Using snow in winter rituals allows us to reconnect with nature's cycles, celebrating changes to our environment and emotional states. It serves as a mystical tool for spiritual practices across various belief systems. For instance, medieval Jewish mystics were way ahead of the "cold plunge" trend, opting to roll around in the snow to get rid of their negative vibes. In Nordic folklore, the first snowfall has magical powers of granting wishes, making it the perfect time where wishes come true, much like wishing upon a star.
In a constantly changing world, rituals are the emotional GPS that tell you where you are when life veers off the road. Rituals bring rhythm by providing structure in chaos. They offer a framework for navigating time, marking events, and tracking life's cycles. Whether carving pumpkins at Halloween, lighting candles during the winter solstice, decorating eggs for Easter, or setting off fireworks for 4th of July celebrations, each ritual can ease stress and provide comfort.
The transformative qualities of snow make it ideal for rituals focused on cleansing, letting go, and starting anew. Here are three rituals using snow to harness the energy of the moment to enhance intentions.
Cleansing with Melted Snow Water
· Collect fresh snow and melt it to use the water for bathing or soaking your feet to feel refreshed and grounded.
· Leave out a bowl of fresh melted snow water in the energy center of your home to remove stagnant energy. Refresh the bowl every morning, releasing the spent water outside your home.
Releasing Energy by Writing in the Snow
· Draw what you want to release using symbols, sigils, or words written in the snow.
· Observe the gradual melting of the snow and the fading of the writing as a metaphor for letting go—witness its dissolution.
Manifesting Intentions on Paper Embedded with Seeds
· Use compostable seed paper (toilet paper works great!) as a vessel for manifesting.
· Write an intention on the paper you want to manifest for the coming spring.
· Wrap a seed in the paper and plant it deep in the snow some place where you can watch the plant appear in the spring.
The transformative power of snow is right outside your door—reminding you that you should have moved to Florida three winters ago. As you prepare for the next storm, consider incorporating snow rituals to promote transformation, renewal, and release.
